A sermon to discover God's unwavering promises for His children by diving into His attributes. His greatness (Gadula), power (Gabura), glory (Tiferet), victory (Nesah), majesty (Hod). Boost your faith journey today!
In my present continuous study of Hebrews, God has been telling me many things. His Rest is one beautiful thing that I am learning about. His promises are another. His hope and the future I have with Him in chapter 6 is where I draw my message today from.
Introduction
Hebrews 6: 13 onwards, we read God’s promise to Abraham. An interesting thing that the writer refers to about that promise is that since there was no one else around greater to bear witness or to “swear by”, God takes an oath in His own name. I paused there for a while. I know Abraham is a great patriarch for us, but just this aspect makes him much, much greater than anyone else.
Let’s read that portion in Genesis 22:15-18
15 The angel of the Lord called to Abraham from heaven a second time
16 and said, “I swear by myself, declares the Lord, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son,
17 I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies,
18 and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed because you have obeyed me.
Verse 14 is where we are introduced to Yahweh Jireh (God our provider) and immediately after He “swears” by Himself to
Surely Bless Abraham
Make his descendants as numerous as stars in the sky and sand on the shore
His descendants will take possession of the cities of his enemies
Through his offsprings, ALL nations on earth will be blessed
Note, all this God states, because of Abraham’s obedience. Absolute obedience!
Let’s get back to Hebrews 6. We knew Abraham waited patiently and then received the promise. There is a significant gap between the oath and the performance of the promise. Abraham knew very well that God will “come through” on His WORD.
Verse 16 states that when we take an oath we call upon someone greater than ourselves to hold them to it. And that oath is binding. With God and Abraham, it was the same. God bound Himself with an oath to Abraham so that when he receives this promise, he knows GOD will never change His mind. Both are delivered hand in hand, the oath and the promise
God Bounds Himself for us and to us
Verse 17-18 extends the same to us as well. God cannot lie and cannot change and His promises for us are the same category. What we don’t realize often is that He has “swore” on Himself to deliver these promises. Yes, there could be a slight gap in the performance of the oath, but He will come through! He ALWAYS DOES.
Why then don’t we Trust HIM?
Why then do we have an issue in believing in these promises? I believe our doubts are primarily due to two main reasons
Not seeing the “performance” of the oath- We are spiritual beings but relying on our flesh more, and we believe in the here and the now. Unless we see the manifestations of the promises we doubt the same. Our inner being is determined by what our physical being tells it. E.g “You cannot get pregnant vs God’s promise of you being a parent”, “your business is dying vs God’s promise of providence”, etc. are interactions of your physical being having a bearing on how you think and emote. And therefore, your spirit being is weak.
Not seeing/knowing God for who He is- We do not know who GOD is, simply put. If we know HIM for all that He is then it changes the entire equation.
I realize I cannot help too much for the first point, it’s all a personal journey and we are in the season of transition, so the choice is yours. Believe and it will happen.
The second point is however my chain of thought which led me on this quest to understand GOD, again. I say to myself, this is a never-ending quest. There are so many facets to God’s character I still need to know, to understand. Some which He will reveal only in due time, but I need to be on this journey. Back again.
For the sake of all the promises that we have received over the last so many years, while we wait for them to be fulfilled, we can attempt to know more about the God who gave those promises and swore by HIMSELF to fulfill them as well.
Who are you GOD, I ask again?
God led me to just two verses when I asked Him to reveal something new. What He gave me was not new, but I believe our simple quest today may be a new way of looking at HIM, towards HIM. I challenge you all to walk with me in this simple journey. Of course none of this matters if you don’t want to but I am sure everyone seated here and listening to this message online would love to know deeply more about our GOD.
1 Chronicles 29:11 Yours, O Lord, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the victory, and the majesty. Everything in the heavens and on earth is yours, O Lord, and this is your kingdom. We adore you as the one who is over all things
I looked at each word mentioned in this very popular verse. And listed them down as per their Hebrew meanings. Let’s look at each one of them individually. I hope that this will enable us to lean on to HIM more, trust HIM more, understand HIM more and surrender to HIM more.
Greatness: Hebrew word G’adula- means greatness, majesty, honor or dignity. The specific form used in this context refers to God’s immense nature and being, indicating that God is vast and unlimited (unlike pamir plateau as an eg.). Other places where the same is used is 2 Samuel 7:21 (Because of your promise and according to your will, you have done all these great things and have made them known to your servant.) If we just look at Ps 145:3 which states He is Great therefore worthy of our Praise and no one can measure HIS greatness. Immeasurable. Ps 145:6 talks about his deeds which are awe-inspiring and therefore on every tongue which leads me to PRAISE and Proclaim His greatness. (DEEDS)
Power: Hebrew word G’abura- means strength, might, valor, bravery, mighty deeds, signifies God's inherent strength, prowess, and ability to accomplish His will, complementing other attributes. Everything is under HIS control and there is nothing out of HIS control. His Supreme capability to create, sustain, nourish, prosper and rule. This word is mostly used in the book of Kings where you see this particular verse “The rest of events in XYZ king’s reign, the extent of his POWER and everything he did is recorded. (KINGLY). His power is Royal cause He is ROYAL. This power when we witness in our lives is worthy to be told to next generation PS 145:4 and verse 11 same chapter it repeats that once witnessed we cannot stop giving examples (testimonies) to others. The same word is used in Ps 89:13 for His strong right ARM( my personal favourite)
Glory- Hebrew word Tip’ara or Tiferet – means Glory beauty splendor or honor
Beauty, finery (of garments and jewels)
Glory of rank, renown as an attribute of God
Honor (or nation of Israel)
Glorying, boasting
Most of this word usage is for Glory of God but there are many verses meaning beauty as well. What interested me was the usage of this word for Aaron’s clothes in Exo 28:2 and Exo 28:40. And then usage refers to the temple (2 Ch 3:6, 1 Ch 22:5), the ARK, Jerusalem and Zion. God inhabits in our praises and what’s more greater than to Praise Him for HIS Glory which is perfectly showcased when the new temple which is the CHURCH through Jesus is magnified and glorified. (TEMPLE)
Victory- Hebrew word Nesah- means eminence, perpetuity, strength, victory, enduring of life endurance in time, everlastingness, ever! God is for ever. Take that in. Nothing can outlive HIM. And only one of His creation is for ever as well John 3:16 through His SON who is also ageless. That is US. HE was before time and He is beyond time (as a dimension). We cannot comprehend this fully. He is always THERE! One beautiful verse that captures this word is PS 16:11 and Ps 49:9. (ETERNITY)
Majesty- Hebrew word Hod- Means splendor, vigor and Majesty. A lot of usage of this word is in verse like Job 40:10 where God “puts” on Majesty or is surrounded by Majesty 1Ch 16:27. Ps 104:1 states He is robed in Majesty. Or in a crude way, to say that He is made of Majesty as He is Majesty. I like that. God is made of splendor and majesty. And He covers His people with the same. He towers above us or His majesty towers over the earth and heaven (Ps 148:13). Whatever He is or He does reveal His Glory, His Majesty, His Splendor and He never fails (Ps 111:3)
Why is God leading us to understand more about His nature and character based on just one verse? Why is it important that we focus on these attributes once again? Let me ask you this, can we add these to HIM when we say “All glory to oh GOD”? I mean by us praising HIM in this way, is HIS Glory or Majesty or Power or Greatness increased? NO way. We cannot increase HIM and yet we Praise HIM for who HE is. He knows it already but HE loves it when His beloved children call out to HIM and Praise HIM and Worship HIM for who He is and what He does like HIS DAY job. Victory is guaranteed. Power is HIS Name, He is the greatest ever.
And yet we often cannot see beyond our situation. We cannot believe anything that hasn’t happened yet and we let go of all the prophecies and the promises that HE gave by swearing on Himself! Why?
If we are able to know MORE of HIM or Know deeper about HIM, I believe our worship will change. And when there is true worship as we heard last week, it transforms US. Our worship does not change GOD, it changes US. Our belief system, our faith and our hope in the very promise that HE gives.
Our response then?
All of these truths are not new. Nothing I said today is not known by most of you.
There was gap in the oath and the performance of the promise given to Abraham by GOD. He was called in Genesis 12 where God said Abram will be a gather of nation (Age 75). God made a covenant with Abram in Genesis 15 (approx. age 85) and the final promise was (or the star of it with birth of Isaac) was at Age 100. But what is interesting is that God declares Abram to be righteous in Genesis 15. Right about middle of this journey. Why? Cause he believed! Let’s read Verse 5-7 of genesis 15. It’s a flip. In the mind of Abram. Imagine, when he sees the countless stars and he hears God voice, there is a choice still in his soul. Do I take my God for HIS word? And he does and God credits him with righteousness.
We are all on a journey, different steps but wherever we are, our faith in HIM changes us. And faith comes from hearing the word of God (Romans 10:17). Also, faith is action oriented (James 2:26)
It’s one thing to praise GOD (as a culture) and something else to truly believe in HIM and act on our belief. Let’s do a simple exercise. Where are we in our journey and how can we submit our need for HIS help in taking us further in this journey?
Even though image seems to be more on self-appraisal and motivation, I thought we could assess the same for our faith journey. Ask yourself, where are you in terms of the last promise you received? Do you think for that, you are in a stage of no, I won’t do it or somewhere in the middle where you state, ok, I believe but how do I do it or the last scale where you totally trust in HIM and say GOD, I will do it?

Conclusion
Wherever we are in this journey, there is always scope for you to look to GOD for answers. Yes, I heard the doctor say that I can’t get pregnant, but I know GOD what you told us, and what that means in my daily life? God, I know you are victorious (picking on one attribute) and although I seemingly face defeat in my workplace, God, help me to see YOUR hand in my life and build my faith to trust in YOU alone.
2 Sam 7:21 refers to “greatness” and states because of your promise and according to your WILL, you have done all these great things and have made them known to your servant.
But outcomes here is not what is important. It is for our time here in our lives and yes we have our desires and wants and God has a place for them all in His loving kindness but only in HIS perfect will. Hebrews state many did not receive what was they were waiting for but was yet commended for their faith. That’s the focus, faith and not the outcomes.
With outcomes based vision we will always have gaps (our minds are after all finite) but our lens change when we see spiritually (Eph 1:17)
Ministry
Let’s read Ps 145 and pray and ask HIM to help us to know our GOD, even more today. Let’s reflect on each verse and dwell on HIS attributes as we discussed today
My attempt for myself first and to you all today is to reflect once again on HIS greatness, His Power, His Glory, His Victory and His Majesty so that we remember who we are, and to who we belong and to who we are accountable but also who looks out for US.
Benediction
Jude 25: To the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen
