The Shiloh Effect

Shiloh’s story reminds us that sacred places can lose meaning when rituals replace true worship. From Israel’s tabernacle journey to Shiloh’s decline, the lesson is clear: faith must move beyond tradition into living intimacy with Jesus, the true Shiloh, who tore the veil and gives us direct access to God’s presence.

Introduction

In this body by now we are quite familiar with hearing “movements”, “changing seasons”, “transitions”, “newness”.

Today I have a very simple message about a place which intrigued my curiosity based on my study of Hebrews 9 where I was reading about the old rules of worship. The old covenant was for a season, for a time and had its limitations which we know are now fulfilled in Christ.

Do we today also feel we are distant from the holy of holies. In the old testament an average Hebrew would not be able to approach the innermost room but today we have access. Jesus gave us the complete access on account of what He has already done for us. His death tore the curtain. We have direct access now.

TORN VIEL, YET OLD HABITS

But then, I realized that we are all sometimes still guilty of being in the same old place. A place where we are stuck in the past. No movement, no transition.

I thought of God’s way in the Old Testament. It led me to study the journey of the Tabernacle and the Ark. We will look at one such place “Shiloh” a place GOD once used but never meant to stay!

The Journey

I summarize some of the positions of the Tabernacle and the Ark from my study.

  1. Mt. Sinai - Together- 1st year. Exodus 25-30, Leviticus 8-9, Construction, instructions for assembly, movement, people duties to carry, overall conduct, etc. God’s glory fills it Ex 40:34. Let’s read that portion for its quite important. Some specifics

    1. Moses could not enter when the cloud (Glory of God) was on it.

    2. Daytime it was cloud; nighttime it was fire in the cloud.

  2. Wilderness - Together - 38-40 years. Num 10:11-33, 49; 9:15-23. Israel complained at many places. Different times, different things, personal jealousy (Miriam and Aaron), cribbing for meat, water. But there is worship continuity. The procession is quite majestic, and the movement is quite specific signifying utter reliance on God.

  3. Gilgal - Together. 7 years. First encampment after crossing Jordan, circumcision renewed, First Passover in promised land, last manna, altar built at Mt Ebal, covenant renewal. Gilgal signifies Lord “rolling away our shame”.

  4. Shiloh - Longest stay - on this in detail later.

  5. Ebeneze r- Ark and Tabernacle separated. The glory departs. 1 Samuel 4 Icahbod

  6. Separate Ark

    1. Philistine Pentapolis: 1 Sam 5:1-6:1, 7 months, Dagon idols fall, plagues strike Philistines.

    2. Beth-Shemesh> Kiriath-Jearim: 60-70 years, 1 Sam 6:10-7:2, 70 men stuck for irreverence.

    3. Obed Edom- Jerusalem- Uzzah stuck dead, David’ dance, new tent pitched.

  7. Separate Tabernacle

    1. Nob- very brief period- Ahimelech serves David, showbread, Saul massacres priests.

    2. Gibeon-40-70 years, Bronze altar, furnished by Zadok, Solomon offers 1000 sacrifices and receives wisdom.

  8. Ark+Tabernacle - Solomon’s temple- 400 years, Tabernacle furnishing brought into the temple with Ark, FIRE descends again, temple supersedes it as permanent dwelling place until it’s destroyed by Babylon.

Realized, God kept moving, but His people eventually stopped!

Now let us just look at Shiloh

The first time this word appears in the bible is Genesis 49:10

The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from his descendants until the coming of the one to whom it belongs, the one whom all nations will honor.

The text highlighted above is also rendered as until Shiloh comes. It signifies peace, tranquility. This is part of Jacob’s blessing to his son Judah. And has clear Messianic tones for a future Ruler holding the scepter.

Shiloh then shows up in Joshua 18. This is an existing city in the promised land. There could be many reasons why Joshua/Israel chose this place as the spiritual capital of Israel.

Some thoughts for this place for us to consider:

  1. This verse talks about when Israel subdued their new land. The word used Kabas is the same that was used in Genesis 1:28 when God blessed Adam and Eve handing over the reins of Eden.

  2. Number 32:22 God’s speaks about this place in the future.

  3. Part of Ephraim hill country and was already named Shiloh which means peace.

  4. Centrally located in Canaan paving the way for it to be the administrative and military capital as well. Joshua divided the land amongst the tribes here. 22 miles north of Jerusalem in today’s position.

  5. Joshua himself from the tribe of Ephraim (Joshua 16:1-4) was here so it was easy for him to administer. (Josh 19:49-50 Timneth Serah)

  6. Levites were also given territories in Ephraim (Shechem, Joshua 21:21)

Shiloh is then established as the center of worship. First time it changed from a nomadic set up to a permanent settlement. It stayed here for 369 years. Through the books of Joshua and Judges time.

The rise of Shiloh is exemplary. It was a good place, UNTIL it wasn’t anymore. A blessing, until it became a trap

The FALL

But it had a fall. Dramatic. The sequence of events is as follows (without going into a lot of details). Step by step how something so HOLY became so hollow

  1. 300 years have gone by, and the people have become comfortable with the place and made it more of traditions. True worship has given way to annual festive gatherings. Judges 21:19

  2. A center of idolatry: Judges 18. Tribe of Dan sets up a man’s own image (Micah) as an idol. Judges 17:6 talks about Israel not having a king therefore anyone did whatever they wanted. Micah made a shrine, made his son as a priest, made another Levite as a personalized priest and when the tribe of Dan was finding a place to settle, they think Micah and his priest are the real deal, so they hire them for their battles.

  3. Civil War- The story is one long horror tale starting from the Levite and his concubine continues with a war of Israel vs a tribe of their own Benjamine, a massacre of an entire city and finally abduction of young women in Shiloh where they had come to worship.

  4. Sons of Eli and their wickedness- Both Phineas and Hophini were atrocious in their sins toward God first and to His people. They would forcefully take the meat used for sacrifice and seduced young women at the gate of the Tabernacle. Eli the main priest saw this and just pointed the sin out with no strong rebuke or restrain shown.

  5. Separation of Ark and Tabernacle- Why would a group of people united by all that their history taught them about who GOD is and where HE Tabernacles with His people, choose to separate the tent and the Ark? They assumed that the Ark had power (as compared to GOD who is power) to the place of battle (and guess who took them there, of course the sons of Eli). Despite Philistines fear for “God” to be in the midst of the Israelites army, they defeat them comprehensively and take away the ARK.

What happened there? And can it happen to us too. Every sign everything pointed us to the right thing. Our relationship with GOD often starts really well. But over time we rely on some customs, some behaviors and have become quite comfortable where it all starts going down.

Our Body like the Tabernacle

Let’s draw some parallels to our lives now. We often become quite comfortable with our routines and try to put God in a box. Sin creeps up on our doorstep and we become immune to its effect and then we separate God from everything/everywhere.

In a way, the Tabernacle and Ark of the covenant are like our physical being. A LIVING TABERNACLE if you may

  1. Outer court is like our Body- interacting with the physical being, 5 senses. The sins of sons of Eli started here which is what happens to us too. We hear or see something, and it enters us and spirals to corrupt our minds (holy place).

  2. Inner Court is like our Soul, where we think, our emotions, our thoughts so often almost always influenced by what and how we interact with the outside world. (Miriam, when she complained, was made to camp out for 7 days.)

  3. Holy of holies, is like our Spirit, designed for personal communion with God who is a spirit.

But we often park ourselves in the location. Ask yourself, why do you feel more “sacred” or “holy” when you come to church on Sunday? Why do we think God is limited to only places where the preacher or the worship is great. Good questions to ask.

Or, when was the last time we allowed God to hover over us like how he filled the Tabernacle with His presence? The Cloud to come down and stand at the gate and to call out the names of his people. Imagine this scene when the enemy or the opposition would accuse you, the child of God, standing outside the outer courts and God comes “down” and defends you like He did Moses. Saying, how dare you speak about Moses (replace with your name). He is the one who knows me and sees me and talks to me because I have revealed my plans to Him, plans to prosper not to destroy. (Number 12:5-8)

We are not meant to just visit God’s presence- we are meant to carry IT.

Some Applications

  1. Are we able to identify a Shiloh in our lives? Where we stick to a place or an identity which is not from God, a habit or routine or style. Or have you overstayed a place when its time to MOVE. Time to break free.

  2. We need to guard the gates. Be careful of what we watch, hear, speak see and sense. Psalm 101:3. Honor your God with your body Rom 12:1

  3. Born again Soul - we speak about this very often here. Meditating on scripture is an excellent way. Joshua 1:8

  4. Live out from the Spirit. Daily access to HIM. Let us draw near to Him with confidence (Hebrews 10: 19-22). Obedience in motion, move with the “CLOUD.”

  5. Don’t carry the ARK without the KING. Matthew 15:8-9

  6. Become the ALTAR. 1 Peter 2:5

Conclusion - A CALL

This is also call to reflect for us. The psalmist in Psalms 78:60-61 talks about this. Let’s read this from verse 56.

God left His glory and allowed His strength to be with the enemies. This is hard for us to take. Especially when we have allowed us to be like the place of “Shiloh.”

Jeremiah 7:12 also states the same as a reminder for us to go and see what could happen. It is a call for us to reflect. On our pasts, on our comforts, on our “SHILOHs” and what could possibly happen. Thankfully, we have JESUS, our true everlasting “Shiloh”. Earthly sanctuary was always meant to be a shadow of what is to COME. Jesus enters this greater and perfect tent not made by human hands but by HIS own blood securing eternal redemption. Hebrews 9 (my original text for this study)

Before God judged Shiloh, he had a man in place- Samuel, who laid down in God’s Presence, who heard His voice. Shiloh like a community is not the answer but Samuel like community that walks in obedience and by revelation (1 Sam 3:1). They hear the voice of the Master over other noises and voices. Believers must be intentional here. Those who obey will hear His voice.

God judges the powerful but impure leaders of Shiloh (Eli and sons) but elevates the powerless and pure Samuel. So, would you rather be powerful and impure or powerless and pure before God?

Everything about the Samuel community is birthed by prayer. They are prophetic voices to a generation. They move with kingdom strategy and train others in the kingdom way (Samuel’s co of prophets). They are called to anoint kings which speaks of moral authority and influence over power structures.

They operate with a dominion mandate that God delegated to Adam and Eve but restored in Christ.

Today HE IS ASKING us again. To not go to our Shiloh but to HIM. Not to a place but to the person of JESUS. We rely on the Holy Spirit’s guidance to do this, not on our own. Jesus is our peace and the KING promised in Genesis 49:10 the One to whom the scepter belongs.
