Divine Appoinments: Shavout - Prepare to Meet Him

  • May 25
  • 11 min read

Shavuot, the Feast of Weeks, marks God’s covenant at Sinai and the Spirit’s outpouring at Pentecost. At Sinai, law was written on stone; at Pentecost, the Spirit wrote on hearts. Fire, covenant, and harvest unite both events—3,000 died at Sinai, 3,000 saved at Pentecost. Shavuot reveals God’s desire to dwell with His people, transforming them from within, empowering witness, and fulfilling His divine appointments

Introduction

The Hebrew word Moedim (plural of Moed) means “appointed times,” “appointed meetings/places,” or “appointed feasts of the Lord.” “These are the appointed feasts of the LORD, holy convocations (Mikra Kodesh) at their appointed times.” (Lev 23). They affirm a covenant relationship with the LORD and remind His people of His faithfulness throughout history.

The Seven Appointed Feasts

  • Spring Feasts (4) : Passover (Pesach) , Unleavened Bread , First Fruits , Pentecost (Shavuot)

  • Fall Feasts (3) : Trumpets (Yom Teruah), Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur), Tabernacles (Sukkot)

  • Weekly Appointed Feast : Sabbath (Shabbat) – 7th day

The Spring Feasts point to Jesus’ first coming, including His death, burial, resurrection, and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The Fall Feasts point toward His second coming, judgment, and the ultimate restoration of all things. The three pilgrimage feasts mark important moments in the annual harvest calendar: Passover is the beginning of the barley harvest; Shavuot marks the end of the wheat harvest and beginning of the fruit harvest; and Sukkot marks the end of the fruit harvest.

Shavuot: A harvest festival. God’s generous provision. Known as Festival of weeks: Chag HaShavuot, Feast of Harvest: Chag HaKatzir, Festival of first fruits (bikurrim): Chag Habikkurim, Pentecost

Feast of Weeks Lev 23:15-22, Deut 16:9-10

Calculation: Shavuot, meaning “weeks”. The Lord commands, "From the day after the Sabbath, the day you brought the sheaf of the wave offering(barley), you are to count seven full weeks (Counting of the Omer). You shall count fifty days until the day after the seventh Sabbath, and then present an offering of new grain to the LORD." (Lev 23:15-16). In Deut 16:9-10 , the Israelites are instructed, "You are to count off seven weeks from the time you first put the sickle to the standing grain.”

Passover is the reference point. PASSOVER (day after Sabbath) → 7 full weeksSHAVUOT.

Offerings & rituals:- Shavuot begins by remembering what God has done for us!. The land and the harvest both came from Him and belong to Him.

  1. Israel was commanded to “present a grain offering of new grain to the Lord (Lev 23:17) "Bring two loaves of bread from your dwellings as a wave offering, made of two-tenths of an ephah of fine flour, baked with leaven, as first-fruits to the LORD." These loaves, made with leaven, are unique among the offerings, as most other offerings are unleavened. The festival includes burnt offerings, grain offerings, drink offerings, food offerings and sin offerings (Num 28:26-31).

  2. One of the three feasts when males were required to present themselves at place Lord chose – not empty handed with Free will offering of first fruits (bikkurim) of the ground, (wheat ,barley, vines, figs, pomegranates, olives and date (honey)) of the harvest in a basket giving what he is able according to blessing God has given (Deut 16:16–17). They were to make a proclamation before the priest serving ‘I declare today to the Lord your God that I have come into the land that the Lord swore to our fathers to give us.

  3. A time to rejoice before the Lord your God with family, servants, Levites within towns and remember the poor, widow, fatherless and sojourners. “And when you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap your field right up to its edge, nor shall you gather the gleanings after your harvest. You shall leave them for the poor and for the sojourner…” (Lev 23:22). Provision.

  4. It is to be a holy convocation. No ordinary work and a statute forever throughout generations.

But this was more than a Physical Harvest. Historical significance: Giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai including the Ten Commandments, to Israel exactly 50 days after the Exodus from Egypt starting from Passover, aligning with the timing of Shavuot. (The 3rd month after Israel had gone out of the land of

Egypt, on the same day, they came to the Wilderness of Sinai and camped there before the mountain). This was the beginning of the fulfilment of what God said to Moses in encounter at the burning bush Ex 3:12: this shall be a sign to you that I have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain. (Mt Horeb/ Sinai). The covenant which God made with the Israel at Mt. Sinai, is represented as a marriage contract – a Betrothal. God became their husband, and they became his spouse and bride. You are my Prized Possession – walk in honesty & truth together.

Passover (Israelites leave Egypt /slavery) → 50 days → God gives Torah on Mt Sinai. (Shavuot)

Ex 19:16-20 : Wedding Language: God & Israel. I am your God , you are mine.

  1. INSTRUCTIONS: Like a betrothal (take, marry - laqach), God set boundaries for the people at Mt Sinai, They were to consecrate themselves for 2 days, wash their garments, abstain from intimacy and be ready for the 3rd day. Also, not to go up into the mountain or touch the edge of it. Whoever touches the mountain shall be put to death. Only when the trumpet sounds a long blast, they were to come up to the mountain.

  2. On the morning of the third day there were signs of power and glory i.e. thunders and lightnings and a thick cloud signalling the presence of God in a terrifying sense. Very loud trumpet (shofar) blast, so that all the people in the camp trembled. The sound of the trumpet did not come from the camp, but from heaven itself.

  3. Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God, and they took their stand at the foot of the mountain trembling in fear. Mt Sinai was wrapped in smoke - the Lord had descended on it in fire. The smoke of it went up like the smoke of a kiln, and the whole mountain trembled greatly. Sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God answered him in thunder.

  4. The Lord came down to the top of Mt Sinai and called Moses up. The people heard the Lord God speak in an audible voice. He declared His covenant with Israel, and commanded them to follow the 10 Commandments, and he wrote them on two tablets of stone. The tablets were God’s work, and the writing was God’s writing engraved on the tablets. (Deut 4:13) [Light & Remove stone]

  5. When Moses descended from the mountain he saw the golden calf and the people dancing; and Moses’ anger burned, he threw the tablets from his hands and shattered them to pieces at the foot of the mountain. The people earlier said ‘All that the Lord has spoken we will do.’ Law is perfect - they sinned and committed idolatry, on that day three thousand were killed that day.

This Shavuot established the covenant, calling Israel to be a “kingdom of priests and a holy nation” a covenant people, set apart to live in holiness and reflect God’s character to the world.

Shavuot/Pentecost in the New Testament: The term "Pentecost" is derived from the Greek word "Pentēkostē," meaning "fiftieth," as it occurs fifty days after Passover. (Acts 2)

Passover is the reference point. PASSOVER - Crucifixion (Jesus – our Passover lamb resurrection saves us from sin & death) → 40 Days Jesus on Earth & Ascension (He is glorified and seated at the Right Hand of the Father) → SHAVUOT 10 days later (Coming of the Holy Spirit).

Jesus after His resurrection from the dead(Day of First Fruits – First of the First Fruits) walked the earth and presented Himself alive by many infallible proofs appearing to disciples over a period of 40 days talking to them about the kingdom of God. He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had promised – the Holy Spirit. 10 days later is Shavuot. For believers in Messiah Jesus, it is very significant that God sent a visible manifestation of His Spirit upon us on Shavuot.

As was the custom Jewish pilgrims from around the world gathered in Jerusalem to celebrate Shavuot and present their offerings at the temple. At no other feast would there have been representatives of so many nations. Acts 2:1-11 , Timing is at 9 am (3rd hour of the day)

  1. The disciples (120 – Acts 1:15) gathered together sharing the same heart, same love for God, same trust in His promise, and the same place. Whether they were in the upper room or in the temple or a public place they were united in their views, intentions, and affections, there was no discord or strife among them. They knew what and why they were celebrating on Shavuot.

  2. Suddenly a sound came from heaven like a rushing violent wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting/dwelling. Sudden move of God, Real like the sound of wind, from heaven and full of force, coming with great power. The description reminds us of the “sound of a trumpet” on Sinai and Spirit of God hovering over the waters of the newly created earth.

  3. There appeared to them divided tongues as of fire (WHY), and one sat upon each of them and they were all filled with the gift of Holy Spirit fulfilling promise of Jesus, in God’s timing and together. The “tongues of fire” echo the fiery presence of God: All-consuming Fire, the allsufficient Almighty - El Shaddai. The same God whose glory appeared as a pillar of fire & cloud in the wilderness and above the Holy of Holies(mercy seat) now rested upon His people (who are now His temple - dwelling place) through the Holy Spirit. The tongues of fire themselves resemble the Hebrew letter Shin ( ש ), the first letter of Shaddai. Its flame-like shape points to the holy, consuming, purifying, and indwelling presence of God. Just as the fire of God once rested above the mercy seat in temple, His Spirit now rests upon and within believers.

  4. Outcome was all those around began to speak (around 120) with other languages as the Spirit gave them utterances. These were languages that they were never taught. A crowd of devout men from every nation under heaven quickly gathered (Probably 70 as nations from Noah: Gen 10. Many of these were there since Passover, when an angry mob demanded the execution of Jesus), being attracted by this sound, Either the sound of the rushing mighty wind or the sound of speaking in other tongues. They were astonished to see Galileans who were uncultured and poor speakers speak so clearly in their own native language about the mighty works of God. Different reactions from the crowd , some amazed , some bewildered, some perplexed and some mocking.

  5. Shavuot is a “harvest” of souls, first at Sinai, where Israel was formed as God’s covenant people, and later in Jerusalem, where the Holy Spirit empowered the early believers. This dual harvest underscores God’s desire to dwell with His people, first through the Torah and later through the Spirit inviting both Jews and Gentiles into His Kingdom (One new man in Christ – 2 loaves)

  6. Impact: Peter, who denied knowing Jesus when Jesus was before the Sanhedrin, now stands before thousands boldly preaching the gospel. Led by the Holy Spirit He introduces The resurrected Messiah, Jesus of Nazareth. The great crowd listening to Peter was deeply moved, cut to the heart, convicted by the Holy Spirit, repented were baptised in the name of Jesus Christ -harvest of 3000 souls (NEW GRAIN). The journey to Pentecost begins at the altar of repentance. God's pattern for spiritual awakening starts with His people turning back to Him with their whole hearts.

Shavuot and New Beginnings: What happened on the day of Pentecost was a near fulfilment of that promise (Joel 2) God’s promise to pour out His Spirit on all flesh (This isn't a trickle or a sprinkle, it's a deluge, an overwhelming flood of divine presence), the final fulfilment coming in the last days. This signifies the beginning of the new covenant era, where the Holy Spirit indwells believers (John 4:24.In Spirit & Truth – true worshippers), empowering them for service and witness with His law on their hearts. “But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days,” declares the Lord, “I will put My law within them and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and

they shall be My people.” Jere. 31:33 (NASB) – no house of Gentiles , because in Yeshua through His Blood we are grafted in. Do you love God – keep His commandments! They are not burdensome.

Shavuot : Sinai v/s Pentecost

  1. The giving of the Law and the giving of the Spirit: What started in Sinai was God writing on His law on tablets of stone, we see here as God writing His law in our hearts, giving us a new heart and a new Spirit, removing our heart of stone and giving us a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules. (Eze 36:26,27)

  2. Fire and God’s Presence: Sinai was marked by fire, smoke, thunder, and the audible voice of God. Pentecost was marked by tongues of fire and the Holy Spirit resting on each believer.

  3. Covenant: The people of Israel are commissioned as kings and priests, and the tabernacle/temple is established. In Acts, we see the New covenant, One new man in Christ (Jews & Gentiles) grafted into Him through His blood to be kings and priests. We are betrothed to Yeshua. 1-All nations.

  4. The people’s inability vs Spirit empowerment: Israel said, “All that the LORD has spoken we will do,” yet failed quickly. In Acts 2: At Pentecost, all believers were empowered and in-dwelt by the Holy Spirit to live obediently working through them to advance God’s Kingdom. External v/s internal penetration & transformation by the Word & Spirit. Truth is Yeshua – He changes us.

  5. 3,000 deaths vs 3,000 saved: At Sinai, 3,000 were cut down by the sword and died. At Pentecost, 3,000 are cut to the heart by the word & Holy Spirit and saved. Future: Isa 2:2-3 depicts a time where all nations will flock to the mountain of the Lord to learn His ways and walk in His paths.

  6. Pentecost, in an important sense, is Babel’s reversal: Human attempts to build unity apart from God always collapse (CONFUSION), only the Holy Spirit unites (ONENESS in CHRIST).

Who is Holy Spirit? John 14:16-18. Believers are to know the Holy Spirit, have Him with us and in us.

  • Holy Spirit is God, a gift Father sent in Jesus’ name (not our merit) bears witness of Jesus. The Messiah’s redemptive work and the affirmation of the new covenant.

  • Helper/Ezer : Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor, Counsellor, Strengthener. One who abides with us forever. The great refiner.

  • The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God. (Sons of God).

  • The Spirit of Truth, whom the world cannot receive. Intercedes for us according to the will of God.

  • He is full of divine, not natural, life.

  • He teaches us, searches hearts & brings God’s word to our remembrance.

Take-aways: Do you have Holy Spirit within you? It is a life-long journey.

  1. God is unchanging! The same yesterday today and forever. God wants to speak directly to you.

    • Exodus 19: God came down on Sinai to speak to all the people.

    • Acts 2: God poured out His Spirit so everyone could hear in their own language.

    • Action: Set aside 10 minutes today to read Scripture and ask, “Holy Spirit, what are You saying to me?” Expect God to speak.

  2. Preparation comes before power.

    1. Exodus 19: Israel had to consecrate themselves before God came down. Acts 2: Disciples waited and prayed 10 days before the Spirit came.

    2. Action: Pick one distraction to fast from this week-social media, TV, etc. Use that time to pray: “God, prepare my heart.”

  3. God’s presence changes you from the inside out.

    1. Exodus 19: Law written on stone tablets, external rules.

    2. Acts 2: Spirit writes on hearts, internal desire. Jer 31:33 fulfilled.

    3. Action: Pick one verse this week. Each morning pray, “Holy Spirit, write this on and in my heart today.”

  4. Your mission starts where you are.

    1. Exodus 19: Israel called to be a kingdom of priests to the nations.

    2. Acts 2: Spirit-filled disciples immediately spoke to the nations gathered in Jerusalem.

    3. Action: Tell one person this week something God has done for you. Start with, “Can I share what God’s been teaching me?”

Conclusion:

  • God’s desire to dwell among His people and transform them from the inside out. We are not orphans. In Him we are more than overcomers. Let His finger touch you and transform you.

  • Shavuot gave the law. Pentecost gave the power to live it. Both happened because God keeps His appointments with people who prepare to meet Him. Wait on Him, Hope in Him. Be transformed.
