The sermon emphasizes God’s unchanging holiness as the "The Plumbline" by which all are measured. Using David’s attempt to move the Ark, it shows that good intentions without obedience lead to judgment, while reverence brings blessing. God’s plumbline tests hearts, ministries, and lives, calling for alignment with His laws. True righteousness is found in Christ, while practical holiness is lived daily through the Spirit’s transformation.
Introduction
The book of Amos is a prophetic book that showcases themes of the Lord's justice, His righteousness and His vengeance/judgement. This is also the only book which refers to the word ‘plumbline’ in Amos 7:7-8.
A plumbline is an ancient tool of measurement that has a string with a plumb attached to the end of it. In ancient building practices, precision was crucial for safety and longevity of structures. The plumb line provided a simple, yet essential, method to ensure each stone or brick aligned properly from top to bottom. When hung from its string, this instrument reveals true verticality and becomes the standard by which everything else is measured.
The wonderful thing about a plumb line is that it never changes.
Vertical is always vertical.
The Main Teaching
With this in mind, let’s read of a particular incident that is recorded in 1 Chronicles 13:1-4, 7-14.
Context: This is a time when David has just become King over Israel (finally after a wait of 22 years!) Before David, it was Saul who ruled Israel for about 42 years. Now that David has officially taken charge there is an order that he wanted to restore – which had been missing - Consulting / Enquiring the Ark of the Covenant.
[Ark of the Covenant is a wooden storage chest decorated in solid gold accompanied by an ornamental lid known as the Seat of Mercy. It contains 3 things - the two stone tablets that have the 10 commandments , Aaron’s rod (Ref Numbers 17) and a pot of manna. It was made by Moses, on the instructions from God and was seen and revered as the symbolic presence of God. The gold-plated acacia chest's staves were lifted and carried by the Levites approximately 800 meters (or 2,600 feet) in advance of the people while they marched in the wilderness.] (Ref Exodus 25:10-22)
By the time of Saul, this Ark of the Covenant which hosted the manifest presence of God, giving counsel and guidance - had become a religious relic / an artifact kept separately. King Saul was too impatient a king to consult the ark before any of his battles. It is recorded that under his reign, the people were not accustomed to the Ark of the Covenant!
So into this scene comes King David as mentioned in 1 Chronicles 13. Let’s read.
What do you think happened here? What went wrong? Was God over-reacting?
God is perfect in His decisions and His judgements. The problem here was not in the desire of King David to bring the ark back or the intention of Uzzah to protect it from falling; the problem was the method!
Numbers 4: 5-15 – says that the Ark is to be moved only by the Levites. And even they were never to touch the ark themselves! Only carry it using the poles on the side. Touching the ark was a capital offense under the Hebrew Law.
God’s action was directed against both David and Uzzah. David placed the ark on a cart, following the Philistine’s example (I Samuel 6:7-8) rather than God’s commands. Uzzah, though sincere in his desire to protect the ark, sinned against the given commandment.
Also ironically, David had consulted every leader but neglected to ask/check with God!
What do we understand from this?
Even as David sought to bring Israel back into a relationship with God, God had to remind the nation – quite dramatically, that enthusiasm must be accompanied by obedience to His laws. Must be under the jurisdiction of the given boundary.
Well-meaning intentions do not justify - the lack of holiness/ obedience to the divine order set by God.
Human thought cannot be mixed with God’s holiness to form a new standard! That is the Philistine cart – a symbol of convenience over the reverence that is due.
Uzzah died, yet Obed-Edom was blessed: showing the two-edged aspect of God’s nature/character – He is perfect in His justice and perfect in His love. Romans 11:22 talks about the kindness and the severity of God – highlighting the balance between His limitless mercy and His righteous judgement.
This incident was a divine object lesson to all Israel that God governed the King, not the other way round! God is unchanging. Everything about Him is unchanging. His laws do not change. His nature and character don’t shift – He is the same God over every generation, from eternity to eternity. The same God. The same laws. The same covenant. He has no favourites. Even a David, whom He loved was dealt with perfect judgement. He does not accept back-door entry. Recommendations and bribes and appeasements do not work with Him. It’s HIS Kingdom and it HAS to be His way!
David understood. He didn’t argue his case with God saying – ‘At least I am doing the right thing, unlike Saul! Or Atleast I thought right, I meant to honour you.’ In 1 Chronicles 15:1-15 we read how he corrected himself and his quick “alignment” to the ‘way of God’.
The order of God has to be set up in the way of God!
Conclusion
Coming back to the Plumb-line! The imagery of the plumbline conveys how God measures the actions, hearts, and faith of His people against His unchanging righteousness and Holiness. Just as He did in the case of David and Uzzah.
I believe this ‘plumbline of God’ is being used right now. Hearts and characters are being measured; alignments and loyalties are being tested. Ministries, churches, personal lives are under the scanner. This is a pronounced time of taking stock, making report cards.
The evidence is that of a deliberate shaking. Amos 9:9 says, “For I will give the command, and I will shake the people of Israel among all the nations as grain is shaken in a sieve and not a pebble will reach the ground.” Here, Israel doesn’t just mean the specific nation of Israel but stands symbolic for the people of God that is - The church.
There is a great shaking for a great reveal! That which is wrapped in holiness will move forward. Be it a church, ministry or a person. The reveal is of the ones whose character has been forged in fire. Testing and trials might have ‘reduced’ them – but they have been stretched in their capacity to hold the weight of this season. It is a season of great glory! They will have access to Amos 9:13-14 - because only they can get this job done. Without holiness, we will collapse. It isn’t just a prerogative, but also the only shield/ cover that can keep us standing.
Psalm 93:5 says – “Your royal laws cannot be changed. Your reign, O Lord, is holy forever and ever.”
Let’s be found on the right side.
AMEN.

P.S.
The standard of righteousness is ultimately fulfilled in Christ, who perfectly meets the “plumb line” of God’s law (Matthew 5:17). We receive this righteousness of Christ, enabling us to stand justified before the holy and just Creator. This is positional righteousness – that comes from the finished work of Jesus on the cross.
There is another aspect that of a practical righteousness where there is an ongoing, daily process of aligning your behaviour, thoughts, and actions with God's standards. This is the transformative work of the Holy Spirit in us. We don’t remain the same. We have been transformed. This is God’s heart for us.
